Tokyo’s Unique Escapades

Tokyo is definitely the city for adventure. Any and every weird, niche, quirky activity can undeniably be found here. Whether you’re here solo or with friends, you’ll be able to enjoy everything from game machines to restaurants to markets like you’ve been transported out of this world.
First up, and not to be missed is to spend a day (and night) at Akihabara, the city’s game/anime/electronics center, and shop your way around anything you want to find. Manga? Covered. Figurines? Check. Great cameras at a good price? Done. You’ll have a blast with your friends pointing out this and that, and getting lost in the sea of vibrant LED screens, displays, and music blasting from every shop. Hit up the Taito Game Station or SEGA, each seven floors of pure games. Spend hours (and a lot of 100 yens) in the building, and immerse yourselves in car races, music games, claw machines and much, much more.
In the same area, try the Street Kart Akihabara #1 Tour, specifically the Mario Kart one. Even if you’ve never played Mario Kart (blasphemy!), you’re guaranteed to have fun. Dress up as your favorite characters, hop in the carts, and zoom down the city’s street, racing your friends and having a spectacular view of the city. This real-life version will blow your in-game perceptions, memories and experiences out of the water.

Ever seen a sumo wrestling match and thought, “wow, how’d they do that?” Well, it’s time to find out! Join a sumo class at Raien (Tokyo) where you can try steps and moves with wrestlers, and learn about the spirit of traditional martial arts. Sumo wrestling is an experience you certainly won’t find anywhere else, so have fun and make the most extraordinary memories with your crew! If you don’t want to physically interact, there are various guided tours you can book to observe a practice session up close!

Wind down and head to the Shibuya Crossing. You may have heard of it, but you won’t really know it until you experience it firsthand. Wait at the intersection until the light turns green, then try not to get washed away with the sea of people when it does! Everyone seems to have a destination in mind, but you can stop in the midst of it all and just absorb all the movement, hustles, and sounds. Here’s a challenge: try to cross from all sides! It really is something you can’t forget.

Another thing you won’t forget is getting lost in an alt-world - the Toyosu Fish Market (previously known as the Tsukiji Fish Market). Watch tuna and seafood auctions every morning at 5:30-6:30, and see the largest fish and the best negotiators at work - it’s wild! Rows and rows of fish are laid down for buyers to assess their condition and worth. Walk around the three buildings, take advantage of the observation windows (you can watch almost anything from there!)
and enjoy a good, hearty brunch.
